About the Temple

Mannarasala, near Haripad in Alappuzha district, is Kerala's best-known temple of the serpent deities. It stands inside a cool, shaded sacred grove, and along its paths and under its trees lie tens of thousands of stone serpent images, offered by devotees over the generations. Here Nagaraja, the king of serpents, is worshipped together with his consort Sarpayakshi and the goddesses Nagayakshi and Nagachamundi.

What makes Mannarasala unique is that its chief priest is a woman. The Mannarasala Amma, the senior lady of the Brahmin family that has cared for the temple for centuries, leads the main rituals. Families come from all over Kerala to pray for children, for the health of their little ones and for relief from sarpa dosha, and many return later with their child to give thanks.

History & Aithihyam

The legend begins with the creation of Kerala. When Parasurama threw his axe into the sea and new land rose from the waters, the story goes, the soil was too salty for anything to grow. On Shiva's advice Parasurama prayed to Nagaraja, who made the land fertile and agreed to stay here as its protector. The grove of Mannarasala is believed to be the place where he was consecrated.

A second story belongs to the family of the Mannarasala Illam. A devout, childless couple, Vasudeva and Sreedevi, are said to have nursed serpents that had been burnt in a forest fire. Pleased, Nagaraja blessed them, and Sreedevi gave birth to two sons – one a human child and the other a five-hooded serpent. The serpent son asked his mother to go on worshipping him and then withdrew into the nilavara, the underground chamber of the illam, where devotees believe he still lives in samadhi; he is lovingly called Appooppan, the grandfather. This, the family tradition holds, is why the main worship here is led by the mother of the household.

The role of Mannarasala Amma passes to the senior-most lady of the family, who lives a life of strict discipline and prayer. In living memory Savithri Antherjanam served as Amma from 1916 to 1993 and Umadevi Antherjanam from 1993 to 2023, and the present Amma is Savithri Antherjanam. The rulers of Travancore were long-standing devotees, and the grand Ayilyam celebration in Thulam grew out of a royal visit. The temple is still cared for by the Mannarasala Illam family.
